Breeding & Genetics
The NDSU Pulse Breeding Program principal objective is to develop new and/or improved varieties of pulse crops for regional pulse growers, and to make them available on a cost-effective and timely basis.
The Pulse Breeding program run by McPhee is a new program at MSU in Department of Plant Sciences. He is the first breeder in the program, which began in 2016. He says that the focus of his program is to develop improved cultivars of pea, lentil and chickpea for the northern plains region. The key characteristics for which he selects are disease resistance and seed quality. He sees increased industry interest in pulse flours.
